Technical Issues

This section contains information on some initiatives of relevance to Geotechnical Engineers, which are listed below.

BSI B/526 Geotechnics - National Annex to EN1997-1 and EN1997-2

At the B/526 committee meeting on the 9th March 2007 the final internal comments on the draft documents of NA to EN1997-1 were discussed. It was agreed that a small sub-committee would be arranged to attend to the outstanding comments of a general nature and a further small sub-committee would resolve the outstanding comments relating to piling matters. The document would then proceed to BSI for production. Although no firm timescale was established it was hoped that the document would be published.

The NA to EN1997-2 is nearly finalised and will be sent to BSI by April with publication expected mid 2007.

Various BS's will become "Residual Standards" with the publication of EN1997 and the NAs. These include BS6031, BS8002, BS8004, BS8008, BS8081 and BS8102. Although some organisations have expressed both a need for revision to the existing documents, as well as the documents having to be made compatible with EN1997, there is a general difficulty of lack of funding for any work to be commmissioned.
