First ISSMGE McClelland Lecture now available to view online on the ISSMGE website.

New website now live for Edinburgh 2015.

The BGA has set out their vision to take the association to 2020. We welcome comments on this document, so please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Nominations are requested for the 2013 Shamsher Prakash Research Award, for young engineers, scientists and researchers (40 years or younger, DoB 31.03.1972 or later) from all over the world. For further details please see the Shamsher Prakash website.

Nominations are now open for three vacancies on the BGA Committee. These should be supported by at least three members of the Association and sent together with the written consent of the candidate to the Secretary by 12 noon on 9 April 2013. A short CV or personal statement of about 1/3 of one A4 page (~300 words) should be sent with the nomination. Full details of the requirements are available here.

The next ISSGE webinar will be given by Prof Robert Koerner on “An Introduction to Geosynthetics”. Members are asked to listen to webinars via IP or audio conference rather than by telephone to avoid costly telephone charges levied against ISSMGE. Prof Antonio Gens of the Technical University of Catalonia, Barcelona has been elected ISSMGE Vice-President for Europe for the period 2013-2017 and will take up office at the Paris Conference in September.

Rankine dinner tickets are now available for sale via the ICE website. Please note that we have been testing this system and hope to have ironed out any teething issues. However, should you experience any problems in making a booking please do not hesitate to contact us. If you are not an ICE member you will have to register as a non-member before booking your tickets.

Abtract submissions open for the TC204 ISSMGE International Symposium on "Geotechnical Aspects of Underground Construction in Soft Ground" - IS-Seoul 2014, Korea (25th - 27th August 2014). The event includes the first Keiichi Fujita Lecture to be given by Hugh St John. Conference website.

Professor Michele Jamiolkowski will discuss "Soil Mechanics and the observational method: Challenges at the Zelazny Most copper tailings disposal facility". Lecture information is available here. The ISSMGE TC212 on Deep foundations has recently produced a draft document for comment on CPRF- Combined Piled Raft Foundation Guideline. If you have any comments on the draft please forward them to one of the UK reps by 01/11/12 at the latest: Tim Chapman, Michael Brown or Tony O'Brien. Alternatively send them directly to the chairman of the technical committee: Prof Rolf Katzenbach. The 13th Glossop Lecture will be delivered by Ruth Allington on "Engineering geology and geomorphology in the design, operation and rehabilitation of quarries - forms and processes, models and cycles, roles and responsibilities." The event will take place on 21st November 2012 at the premises of the Royal Geographical Society, 1 Kensington Gore, London (entrance via Kensington Gore). Details are the event are available here.
