BGA MSc Dissertation Prize
The British Geotechnical Association is pleased to announce the establishment of a new annual prize of £500 for the best MSc dissertation on a geotechnical topic.
The competition is open to student members of the BGA who will be completing a coursework-based MSc in soil mechanics, geotechnical engineering, geoenvironmental engineering or engineering geology in 2011, at a British university.
Entries will be judged by a panel of members of the BGA Executive Committee. The panel will contain both practising geotechnical engineers and academics.
Entries will be assessed using a range of criteria, including: scientific quality; originality; depth and breadth of understanding; standard of presentation; practical significance.
- There is a limit of one entry per university, the expectation being that this would be the top-ranking dissertation emerging from the university’s own assessment process.
- The entry should be submitted by the MSc course leader on behalf of the student.
- If the student is not a BGA member, he/she should be encouraged to join immediately using the 2011 Membership Application Form to ensure eligibility for the prize.
- The entry should consist of a covering email with two attachments, both in PDF format: a) the student’s MSc dissertation, as submitted for assessment; b) a citation letter from the course leader or dissertation supervisor, briefly outlining why the dissertation is considered prizeworthy.
- The entry should be sent to bga@britishgeotech.org.uk
- The closing date for entries is Friday 14 October 2011.
- The outcome will be notified in December 2011.
- It is anticipated that the winner will be invited to prepare a technical paper for publication in Ground Engineering magazine.
- The BGA reserves the right to make no award. In case of any query please contact the BGA Coordinator on 020 7665 2229 or email: bga@britishgeotech.org.uk
